When to visit Guyana

The best time to visit Guyana is from August to March, during the drier season. The landscape is green and beautiful during this time of year and the rainfall is not too high. However, due to the distance to the equator, the weather is warm, humid and tropical throughout the year. Over 90% of Guyana's territory is covered in rainests, meaning the weather and temperature is fairly comparable to that in the Amazon. Travel is easier during the dry season, but may be quieter during the wet season. Guyana’s magnificent Kaieteur Falls has some spectacular views which are better seen during the dry season.

January is typically one of the coolest months in Guyana, with average temperatures ranging between 24-30°C (75-86°F). It is the peak of the dry season, with little to no rain and plenty of sunshine. However, humidity levels can be high, particularly in coastal regions. It is advisable to wear light clothing and stay hydrated to cope with the hot climate.

May to August

This tends to be the wet season in Guyana. It is hot and humid during this period. Travelling by boat during these months can be easier and is a fantastic way to explore areas otherwise inaccessible.

September to April

This tends to be the dry season in Guyana. The dry season offers little relief from the heat, but although insects are seen all year round, they are less densely populated in the dry season. Travelling around Guyana, especially in the interior of the country, is slightly easier during the dry season as roads are almost always accessible during this time. September to November and March to April are a great time for wildlife viewing.

If you want to go to hiking

It is best to go hiking during the dry season, between September and April as the roads and walkways can become waterlogged during the wet season and are inaccessible except by boat.

If you want to see birds

Birdwatching in Guyana is a must, and during the dry season between September and November, and February and April, over 250 species of bird can be spotted, especially in the Rupununi Savannah.

What to do in Guyana

Kaieteur Falls

Visit Kaieteur Falls, one of the world's highest single-drop waterfalls, and its surrounding rainforest. You can spot golden frogs, colorful birds, and potentially even the rare Guiana dolphin in the nearby rivers.

Canopy Walkway

Experience the Iwokrama Canopy Walkway, a series of suspension bridges and platforms that provide a unique perspective of the rainforest canopy and its inhabitants.

Turtle Watching

Witness the annual nesting of sea turtles on the remote beaches of Guyana, including the famous Leatherback Turtle. Some popular sites for turtle watching include Shell Beach and other coastal areas.

River Safaris

Take river safaris along Guyana's numerous rivers, such as the Rupununi, Essequibo, and Rewa Rivers, to spot wildlife like caimans, giant otters, river dolphins and arapaima. As dusk falls you will see the giant Victoria Amazonica water lily, which bloom only at dusk.
