When to visit Argentina

The best time to visit Argentina is usually between November and February, however it does depend on which wildlife you wish to see, as although Argentina can be a year-round country, some experiences and wildlife are season dependent.

The Iguazú Falls are situated in the north and the tropical, humid climate surrounding them makes it great all year round. The north-west also has the world’s driest desert, Atacama where the nights can get really cold, so the winter day times are usually better to visit this area in. The north is home to the Cafayate region too, one of the driest places on the continent and can be enjoyed at any time of year, as can Mendoza in the centre of Argentina. Argentina’s capital, situated in the centre of the country, has an average temperature of 18°C and can be enjoyed all year round, although it is the most pleasant from December to February. If you visit in Argentina’s winter months, it can get rainy. In the south, some parts of Patagonia are inaccessible in winter, making December to March the best time to travel there. With longer days, there is more time to witness the incredible landscapes, glaciers and icebergs. However, do wrap up warm as temperatures average about 5°C in this area.

Falling at the height of the summer, the north of the country is at its hottest time, so it is better to visit the south at this time. With longer days, you’ll be able to take in more of the Patagonian landscape during this month and the weather is slightly warmer than other times of the year.

January to February

The summer months are a popular time to visit, particularly between the peak season between Christmas and New Year which requires early booking to guarantee availability. Being so close to the Antarctic, the southernmost reaches of Argentina, around Ushuaia, are more suited to travel during this time, when the temperature can reach a comfortable 16°C or 60°F. The north of the country experiences the hottest weather during this time.

March to April

Autumn can be an ideal and temperate time to visit most of the country. In Patagonia, it marks the onset of winter albeit before the coldest months set in. It is also a great time to visit Buenos Aires and the Lake District, which feels distinctly fresher outside of peak summer and winter.

May to September

During the winter months, many of Patagonia’s key attractions are closed and the northern areas of the country are amongst the best to visit, such as Iguazu Falls or Salta, where you are likely to experience mild temperatures of around 12°C or 56°F.

October to December

As with autumn, the spring months can be an ideal time to visit most of the country. The Lake District around Bariloche, as well as Patagonia and the capital of Buenos Aires, can become unbearably hot in the height of the summer, so are cooler at this time of year.
