Where to stay in Botswana
1. Jack’s Camp
Jack’s Camp is located in the heart of the Kalahari Desert, next to the largest saltpans in the world. Set amidst palm trees, this remote camp aims to teach about the archaeology and anthropology of the area. This stunning location was discovered by explorer Jack Bousfield in the 1960s - a legacy continued today by his son, Ralph. Built in traditional, 1940s East African safari style, Jack's Camp is appointed with rich, Persian rugs and crisp cotton sheets. The varied activities here aim to give guests an in-depth understanding of the area. The wet season in the Kalahari Desert attracts thousands of pink flamingos and herds of zebra and wildebeest, and in the dry season, guests have the opportunity to explore the immense Makgadikgadi salt pans on quad bikes. The ten, spacious tents at Jack’s Camp are beautifully constructed in a classic safari-style, each with en-suite private showers (indoor and out), a washbasin and flush toilet. Set amidst palm trees, Jack’s Camp is set around a large, central dining tent and a Persian-style 'tea tent', which comes complete with a small library of books, fascinating local artefacts, comfy cushions and rugs. Big game on this side of the Makgadikgadi National Park is scarce for much of the year, and so the unique activities here aim to give an understanding of the area's geology, archaeology and anthropology, as well as a chance to observe its wildlife; a den of hyenas and family of meerkats have been observed in recent years, with the summer rains enticing waterfowl and flamingos.
2. Kwando Lagoon Camp
Set on the shady banks of the Kwando River and consists of eight luxury safari tents. Lagoon Camp provides access to some excellent game viewing and is one of the best areas to see lion, cheetah, leopard and wild dogs. The camp itself is beautiful, with stunning views over the Linyanti Wetlands which offer a variety of habitats to explore, from vast open plains to mopane forest. In close proximity to the wildlife, you will often see elephants and hippos from camp.
3. Mombo Camp
Mombo Camp is one of the most exclusive, luxurious lodges in Africa. The nine spacious luxury safari tents are connected by board walks, and are raised two metres off the ground, allowing animals to move freely beneath the camp - animals may often take refuge beneath your tent. The tents have an indoor and outdoor shower with large verandas complete with private plunge pool and day bed. The camp also has a communal pool, gym and offers in room massages. The service is second to none and the game viewing is regarded as amongst the best in the whole of Africa!
4. Shinde Camp
Shinde Camp is a predominantly water-based camp; tranquil, early morning mokoro trips and sunset boat excursions offer a fantastic experience. Game drives and night drives are also on offer, exploring a private concession in the Okavango Delta. Situated on a large, palm-dotted island in the middle of the Okavango Delta, these luxury safari tents have spectacular views across the wildlife-rich floodplains and lagoon. At Shinde Camp, dining in the 'tree house' is an experience never to be forgotten. A private camp is available for groups, honeymoons or families. Shinde Camp is situated on a lush palm dotted island in the middle of the northern Okavango Delta. 6. Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp
Tucked under a canopy of massive ebony trees, the Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp reveals the splendour and variety of the Okavango in all its glory. 7. Machaba Camp
Machaba Camp is a luxurious tented camp located in the Khwai area of the Okavango Delta. Its name means fig tree and in the local area this symbolises life. The focus of this camp is to get back to nature and truly appreciate the beautiful world around us; the outdoor showers are the perfect setting for this! Being situated on the Khwai riverbank it is in an amazing location for spotting game and other flora and fauna; seeing the animal’s daily expedition down to the river is incredible.
8. Sitatunga Private Island Camp
Set on a remote, exclusive island with just three suites, privacy is guaranteed. And it’s not just humans who benefit; as one of the shyest antelopes on the planet, sitatunga thrive in this watery wilderness. With two suites in the “main” camp and one in the even more exclusive Private Island Suite, the island hosts barely a handful of visitors at a time. All will be met by a sense of space – in bedrooms and separate lounges; bathrooms complete with proper tubs; lounge areas that lead out onto wooden decks, each culminating in a plunge pool.
