The diversity that this continent offers is huge from north to south and east to west.
The savannah plains of Kenya and Tanzania offer one of the biggest wildlife spectacles in the world, the wildebeest migration, with millions of grazers following the rains and with predators in hot pursuit. If the savannah plains don’t float your boat, then head to the lesser known west of Tanzania where you can track the elusive chimpanzees – made famous by Jane Goodall – through the tropical forests of Mahale and Gombe.
If primates are your thing then you can’t forget about Uganda and Rwanda with the last strongholds of the endangered mountain gorilla – with only approximately 1,000 left in the world - an on-foot experience tracking these gentle giants is truly one not to be missed.
For those of you looking for a bit more of a laid-back African safari, then head south and to the sun soaked South Africa; big game in the private reserves dotted throughout the country combine with a wild coastline with whales spotted offshore, great food in Cape Town, or enjoy a local drink or two in the Winelands. Let’s not forget Botswana the jewel in the crown for any African safari with private concessions and access limited to only a high-heeled few.

Known in Mozambique as the ‘Park for Peace’, Gorongosa is one of Africa’s last true wild places with the greatest wildlife restoration story. When the war ended in 1992, the landscape was devastated and more than 90% of Gorongosa’s large mammals had disappeared. Efforts were made to rehabilitate Gorongosa after the war but it wasn’t until 2004, when American philanthropist Greg Carr partnered with the Mozambican government to restore the park, that it started coming back to life. The Gorongosa Restoration Project has worked with the Government of Mozambique for the past 20 years to restore wildlife to the Gorongosa National Park, in what is perhaps the greatest restoration success in Africa.
