Where to stay in the Central African Republic

As a destination that is much less developed for tourism than its African counterparts such as Kenya and Tanzania, the accommodation options in the Central African Republic are much more basic, and many of the lodges and camps have a focus on sustainable tourism rather than luxury. Traditional wood and thatch bungalow-style rooms are not uncommon, with settings on the banks of the Sangha River and complementing the forest that surrounds them.

Sangha Lodge

Lying on the banks and overlooking the Sangha river, hidden amongst riverine trees sits the Sangha Lodge. A basic and comfortable lodge, the 7 en-suite bungalows are all traditionally made from wood and thatch with hot and cold running water, a shower and flush toilet. The large rooms are completely encased with mosquito netting for a good night's sleep. With sensational wide views looking over the Sangha River, the dining area has large tables for the guests to dine communally, enjoying a combination of Western and African flavours and the bar is well stocked with cold beers and drinks. The lodge is run for the purpose of sustainable tourism and focuses on community involvement and development.

Located in the Dzanga-Sangha Special Reserve and providing access to the Dzanga National Park, the main activities here are visiting the Dzanga National Park to track the rare Western Lowland Gorillas and going to Dzanga Bai to find the Forest Elephants. The birding is fantastic, as is the fishing where you can go on the hunt for a Goliath Tiger Fish. There are sundowner boat trips down the Sangha and Babongo Rivers and spotlighting for nocturnal species. Guests also have the opportunity to join the local Ba’aka people on a net hunt!

Doli Lodge
