This safari puts you in the right place at the right time for polar bear viewing at Dymond Lake Lodge. Accessed from the remote outpost town of Churchill via helicopter or light aircraft, Dymond Lake Lodge offers a truly remote wilderness experience in the realm of the polar bear. Settle in to your home for the next three or four days and make the most of the activities on offer from viewing polar bears and the Northern Lights to tundra walks and cosy nights back at the lodge by the warming fire.
Day 1 - Arrive Winnipeg
Day 2 - Winnipeg - Dymond Lake Lodge
Arrive in Churchill by air and then be transferred by fixed wing aircraft, over the historic Churchill River and then northwest up the rugged Hudson Bay coast, to Dymond Lake Lodge. Today includes a guided hike around the rugged and starkly beautiful coastline, an interpretive slide show featuring the wildlife of Hudson Bay and hopefully a clear night for viewing the Aurora Borealis! All this will be topped off with a gourmet lunch and dinner where your hosts and guides will regale you with tales of life and adventures in Canada's Arctic.
Days 3 - 4 - Dymond Lake Lodge
The entire lodge area is patrolled for polar bears all night by one of our night watchmen so be prepared to have your sleep cut short by a nocturnal visit by one of the Great Ice Bears (or by a dazzling display of the Northern Lights!). Each morning after a hot breakfast, your guides will outline a plan for the day’s excursions. If there are bears near the Lodge, your morning tour may be delayed to take advantage of these photo and observation opportunities. The walks are comfortably paced as they are geared towards plenty of viewing and photo opportunities.
Day 5 - Dymond Lake Lodge - Churchill
After breakfast, we transfer by air back to Churchill, spending the day with a guide exploring its rich history as a seaport and visiting the Itsanitaq Museum, the Polar Bear Holding Compound (otherwise known as the Polar Bear Jail), as well as the Parks Canada exhibit. Dog sledding and helicopter charters also fit nicely into this afternoon if you’re so inclined, before a group dinner.
Day 6 - Churchill - Winnipeg
Today you will travel across the tundra in the world famous Tundra Buggies for more polar bear viewing! Lunch "with the bears" will be prepared and served to you on the tour. Tundra Buggies are chartered so there are fewer guests for better views and a higher level of comfort. After your last day with the bears, you will be escorted to the airport for your flight to Winnipeg.
Day 7 - Depart Winnipeg
Traverse nature trails and climb the watch tower for beautiful views, before relaxing with home cooked gourmet meals in front of the cosy fire. The authenticity of the lodge is striking as you land after your 15 minute, scenic flight north from Churchill Bordered by Dymond Lake and Hudson Bay, located on a strip of land, it is in the centre of the polar bear action that has bought travellers here for decades.
