Mozambique Dhow Safari

Explore Mozambique's beautiful Quirimbas archipelago on a dhow. Snorkel, swim and enjoy the stunning turquoise ocean and marine life on your way. This safari explores the Quirimbas Archipelago by both 12ft dhow and sea kayaks. On-board you will have a professional local crew, all of which know the area extremely well and will know where and when to go. Throughout the trip you will have a huge input as to what activities you wish to include, and where you want to venture to. This trip is a perfect balance of exploring these beautiful islands and then relaxing at the tranquil Ibo Island Lodge. You have the option of joining onto one of our many set departures, or creating your very own private departure – a great option for honeymooners, families and groups of friends.

What to expect?

Arrive Pemba

You will be met at the airport and transferred to Mucojo, approximately 3 hours by road. When you arrive in Mucojo embark on a dhow transfer to Mogundula Island, not just a boring transfer, you encounter beautiful birds, enjoy pristine swimming off the sandbank beach and excellent snorkelling. Our mobile camp is set up under shady trees and you usually have this magical island to yourself.

Mogundula Island

Take a day trip by dhow to the Pangane Peninsula and/or Macaloe Island from camp, otherwise you are free to relax and explore your surroundings.

Dhow Safari, Explore Matemo Island

Depart Mogundula for your exploration into the Quirimbas Archipelago. Sail on the clearest of blue water, under which pristine corals are begging to be explored. The Ulumbwa river mouth beckons and you will find fascinating rural fishing villages dotted along the shore. Turquoise clear waters and beautiful scenery awaits you en-route, but before this you will enjoy an early morning sail up the Ulumbwa estuary where you will see a variety of birds and mangroves that thrive in this area. In the afternoon, you will take a tour through this fishing village and will stop on the southern tip of Matemo Island to explore this part of the island. In the evening you will return to your camp at Ulumbwa.

Ulumbwa - Ibo Island

You will visit probably the most compelling attraction in the Quirimba’s, Ibo’s 200-year-old ghost town and 16th Century forts which make for a fascinating journey to an era long forgotten. Ibo Island lodge has spectacular views over the waterfront and accommodates guests in beautifully simple yet elegant rooms. Historic colonial mansions have been stylishly renovated and the lodge features various verandas, tropical gardens and a spectacular roof top restaurant. The emphasis at Ibo Island Lodge is on complete relaxation and it can be your base from which to explore this fascinating island. A beautiful light aircraft flight over the islands and turquoise waters transfers you from Ibo Island Lodge to Pemba International Airport.
