Antarctic Citizen Science Voyage

An exciting journey throughout the Antarctic Peninsula, exploring incredible landscapes and watching for endearing wildlife, including Gentoo penguins, humpback whales, minke whales and much more. There are seven species of penguin and at least three species of whales that you could encounter throughout your journey so keep your eyes peeled at all times for glimpses of wildlife. When wildlife is spotted from the bridge, your captain will endeavour to manoeuvre towards the sightings wherever possible, or you may head out on a Zodiac excursion for better photographic opportunities. Your exact expedition route may vary depending on local ice and weather conditions, the availability of landing sites and opportunities to see wildlife.

What to expect from a trip to Antarctica

What to expect

Arrive into Ushuaia a few days before your trip and spend time discovering the southernmost city in the world. Choose to walk around the town and try the local restaurants, or walk down to the waterfront to take a photo with the famous sign that welcomes you to ‘fin del mundo’ – the end of the earth.

Mid-afternoon you will transfer to the ship and your Expedition Team and ship staff will greet you on board, followed by a safety and orientation briefing and Captain’s welcome dinner. Over the next two days you will venture through the Drake Passage, cross the Antarctic Convergence and then arrive in the circum-Antarctic upwelling zone. During the time at sea, the citizen science program will get underway along with presentations on the goals and methods of this unique voyage from your Polar Experts. lose to the South Shetland Islands you will be able to spot your first icebergs and keep watch for pelagic whales.

The volcanic South Shetland Islands offer amazing abundance and beauty. On-board the Zodiac boats there will be plenty of time to explore and witness this incredible nature up close.

Experience some of the most unique wildlife viewing and inspiring scenery in the world while setting foot on the Antarctic continent. Attempt two shore landings per day (weather permitting) and encounter Gentoo, Chinstrap and Adélie penguin rookeries, Weddell, crabeater and leopard seals, and orca, humpback and minke whales in the cold Antarctic waters. During the voyage, learn about the peninsula's remarkable history. The on-board scientists and researchers will continue their work and provide periodic updates on the study’s progress. After spending 7 days in Antarctica, today you will head back to Ushuaia, spending the next two days sailing the Drake passage. You will arrive in Ushuaia on day 13 of your trip.
